Call Name “Sprig”

Sprig is a seven and a half year old male chocolate lab, owned and handled by Colby Williams of Top Line Retrievers in Hodges, SC. At 25 years of age, Williams has risen quickly among ranks of talented handlers competing in the SRS.

It was while attending Clemson University for a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology that he got Sprig for the intention of hunting. “ Sprig was the first dog I ever trained and training Sprig, well, I got hooked”. Williams started volunteering and working with professional trainers such as Stephen Durrence. “Every weekend, every holiday, every school break I was at the kennel or out in the field, training and learning”. He would eventually turn down a spot at Texas A&M Grad School to continue on the path he had suddenly found himself and Sprig on.

The 5 Big Questions:

Where does your dog sleep? – “Sprig sleeps in the front lobby of the kennel on a leather couch”.

What are your strengths as a handler? – “I would say I have a knack for reading a dog and developing a relationship with every dog under my care. I take the time to learn the dog in and outside of the field.

What are you weaknesses as a handler? – “Experience. As a 25-year-old trainer, for my age, I have done so much but when pitted against these professional trainers who have been doing this for as long as I have been alive, I’m up against a big experience gap. Experience takes time and time is the one thing you can not buy”.

If you had to describe Sprig in one word what would it be and why? –“Balanced. He has an on/off switch and he knows when to use it. Sprig went with me everywhere, whether it was four years at Clemson, hunting, you name it, and he was there right along with me, my constant companion”.

If Sprig could describe you in one word what would it be? – “Well it would be two words, best friend. I hope he would say that”.
